Rice cultivation is omnipresent in Asia, and it is difficult or even essential to go there without seeing one of these lush rice fields. Those in Bali are distinguished by their terraced construction, which is unique in their kind. These green areas are much more than simple rice fields: they are the symbol of a living culture and an ancestral tradition that is more than 2,000 years old.

Indeed, the whole is part of a common irrigation system called the “subak”. A cooperative institution for water management through canals and dams that dates back to the 9th century.

In this article, we list the main rice terraces in Bali, which you can choose according to your itinerary, or your desire to get away from the crowds.

Tegalalang Rice Terrace: The most well known

Located near Ubud, the Tegalalang rice terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are the most famous and the most photographed in Bali. These green hills sculpted by man offer a spectacular panorama, although the places have become a bit too touristy for our taste. Between the human-sized bird nests, and the big swings, everything is designed to add an extra touch of romance, and make you fall in love with an impromptu photo shoot, which will make many of your girlfriends jealous on Instagram. It's even possible to rent long, floppy dresses in case you're not dressed up enough.

The steep paths, which can be a real labyrinth, seem endless and allow you to wander around for several hours. Access can be made via most of the many restaurants, beach clubs, which overlook the valley, or one of our secret entrances specified in the roadbook.

Entry price: 40,000 IDR - That is about 3€

Jatiluwih : Immense on the horizon

Located in the Tabanan region, Jatiluwih is much more than just a rice field: it is a wonder that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012. These carefully sculpted cascading terraces, with the Batukaru Mountains in the background, offer a breathtaking view and are probably the most extensive on the Island of the Gods. Clearly delineated trails have been established to protect the flora, and it is possible to make several loops (see photo below), more or less long, on foot or by bike

Jatiluwih literally means “really beautiful” in Balinese, and once you set foot in it, you'll understand why.

Entry price: 50,000 IDR - That is about €3.50

Sidemen : The Authentic

Located in eastern Bali, the Sidemen rice fields are a real hidden treasure. Nestled at the foot of the majestic Mount Agung, these rice terraces offer an authentic glimpse into rural Balinese life. You can also explore the surrounding traditional villages and meet the friendly locals.

Entry price: 30,000 IDR - That is about 2€

Belimbing : The Pearl of the North West

The rice fields of Belimbing Village (or Blimbing), nestled along Bali's northwest coast, offer a tranquil escape from the tourist hustle and bustle. With its panoramic sea views and perfectly aligned rice terraces, this location is ideal for an immersive experience in Balinese nature. Belimbing is also famous for its coffee plantations, so don't miss the chance to enjoy a cup of freshly roasted Balinese coffee.

Pupuan Road

For an adventure off the beaten path, explore Pupuan Road, located in central Bali. This remote region is a true paradise for nature lovers, with its rice terraces as far as the eye can see and its breathtaking mountain landscapes.
